About Helmara
A Vessel with Purpose
Helmara was founded in Melaka in 2018 by a group of maritime professionals and local historians who shared a simple observation: the Strait of Malacca, one of the most significant waterways in history, was rarely experienced at the pace it deserves.
The city's heritage district draws visitors from around the world. They walk the cobblestones of Jonker Street, admire the Dutch Stadthuys, and photograph the ruins of A Famosa. But the sea that made all of this possible — the sea that brought the traders, the languages, the recipes, the religions — remains at a distance for most people.
We set out to change that. Helmara is a small operation by design. We operate two vessels, carry no more than ten guests per voyage, and invest heavily in the quality of each experience rather than volume of departures. Every member of our crew is either a licensed mariner, a culinary specialist with knowledge of the region's food traditions, or both.
Our voyages are crafted around genuine curiosity about this part of the world. We want guests to leave with a different understanding of what Melaka is — not just a heritage town, but a port that shaped Asia.

How We Operate
Marine Dept. Registration
Both vessels are registered with the Marine Department of Malaysia under the Domestic Shipping Licensing Act. All operating licenses are current and renewed annually.
SOLAS Safety Standards
Safety equipment — life jackets, flares, fire suppression, and emergency positioning systems — meets SOLAS requirements for vessels carrying passengers. Equipment is inspected and recertified regularly.
STCW Crew Certification
Every active crew member holds valid STCW (Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping) certification, including proficiency in survival craft and marine first aid.
Environmental Standards
We operate under a zero single-use-plastic policy and are registered participants in the Melaka Coastal Conservation Programme. Fuel usage is managed to minimise emissions on all routes.
Data & Privacy
Guest data is handled in accordance with Malaysia's Personal Data Protection Act 2010. We retain only the information required to process bookings and communicate departure details.
Heritage Content Quality
Historical information presented on our voyages is reviewed by independent historians familiar with Melaka's maritime and cultural record. Route cards and commentary are updated annually.
Maritime Expertise Along the Strait of Malacca
The Strait of Malacca has been one of the world's most active shipping corridors for over a thousand years. Melaka's position at its narrowest navigable point made it the most important trading city in maritime Southeast Asia during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Spices from the Banda Islands, silk from China, cotton from Gujarat, and gold from Sumatra passed through these waters.
Helmara's voyages draw on this layered history, offering guests direct contact with the waterway that shaped it all. Our captains are not tour guides delivering rehearsed scripts — they are experienced mariners who have spent years on these waters and know their tides, winds, and character intimately.
Operating from Melaka's historic port precinct, we maintain close relationships with local cultural organisations, fishing communities, and conservation bodies. This keeps our understanding of the region current and ensures that what we share with guests reflects the living reality of the coast, not a fixed museum narrative.
For those seeking a yacht experience that moves at a considered pace, with food, history, and nature woven together — Helmara offers something genuinely distinctive in this part of Malaysia.
